Frost River makes this blanket in Duluth, Minnesota from 100% wool — the same fiber they specify for their heritage bedroll kits. It’s the wool component of a traditional cowboy bedroll: lay it under you, fold it over, wrap the whole thing in a waxed canvas tarp and you have a sleep system that has worked in Wyoming winters since the 1880s.
Wool has three properties no synthetic blanket can match: it insulates when wet (critical in mountain weather), it won’t ignite from a fire spark, and it becomes softer and more character-filled with years of use rather than wearing out. At 60 by 80 inches and heavyweight construction, this is a working blanket, not a decorative throw.
For a complete bedroll system, pair two of these with a 7×10 foot 10-oz waxed canvas tarp and 30 feet of 1/2-inch cotton rope. Total cost around $600-700. Total lifespan: indefinite with re-waxing and basic blanket care. Our heritage bedroll buyer’s guide walks through the full build and the honest maintenance schedule.
