The inReach Mini 2 sends and receives two-way text messages via the Iridium satellite constellation: 66 cross-linked satellites in low earth orbit that provide genuine pole-to-pole coverage. That matters in Wyoming because the backcountry routes where coverage would actually save your life are the same places where cell towers don’t reach and SPOT’s Globalstar network has documented gaps. Iridium doesn’t have gaps. The SOS function routes through GEOS, a 24/7 staffed emergency coordination center that dispatches search and rescue and stays on the line with your contacts until the incident resolves. All of this from a device that fits in a shirt pocket and weighs 3.5 ounces.
EMS response in the Mountain West is measured differently than anywhere east of the 98th meridian. In much of Wyoming beyond the interstate corridors, the nearest trauma center is 45 minutes from the trailhead, and that assumes someone already knows you’re down and has called it in. From a remote ranch pasture or a backcountry hunting camp, you might not be found until the following day. A satellite SOS collapses that chain: help is dispatched the moment you trigger the device, your GPS coordinates go with the call, and responders arrive at your exact location instead of searching a section. The working ranch first aid kit guide calls this device “the difference between a stabilization scenario and a life-threatening one in much of Wyoming.” That’s accurate.
The device requires an active Garmin subscription to use messaging and SOS. Current plans start at $7.99/month for the Enabled plan (minimal messaging, SOS included) and run to $49.99/month for the Premium plan (unlimited messages, 2-minute tracking intervals). The Essential plan at $14.99/month covers 50 text messages monthly and SOS, which is enough for most backcountry trips. There’s also a one-time $39.99 activation fee. Budget the subscription into the purchase decision: the device alone functions as a GPS and barometric altimeter, but satellite communication requires the plan.
