The lash rope is the piece of equipment that holds the pack load on the saddle. 40 feet of 1/2-inch 3-strand twisted cotton, with the grip and stiffness to hold a diamond hitch under load over rough terrain and through switchbacks. Synthetic rope is acceptable but slips more in knots; cotton is the traditional choice and performs better.
Weaver Leather has been making horse equipment for generations, and their lash ropes are in use on working outfitter strings throughout Wyoming’s wilderness areas. The 40-foot length is the standard — enough to work a diamond hitch on a loaded Decker saddle with room to tie off at the packsaddle rings.
If you’re building a pack outfit from scratch, buy three — one for each pack animal and a spare. When a lash rope wears or breaks in the field (usually at a knot point that has been tied and untied several hundred times), you need the replacement immediately. The horseback camping guide covers diamond hitch technique and the full packing gear list.
