Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP is what wildland firefighters use on their boots when they need the leather to last a full fire season. The formula — beeswax, propolis, and natural oils — penetrates the fiber and fills the pores without clogging them. It waterproofs and conditions in the same pass, which is the correct approach: condition the leather before it dries out, not after.
No petroleum distillates, which matter on vegetable-tanned leather. Petroleum products break down the vegetable tanning over time; the LP won’t. It will darken leather noticeably — this is correct, not a flaw — and it builds a water-resistant surface that holds up to genuine field conditions.
Application: warm the tin in your hands or set it in the sun for a few minutes. Apply thin with a cloth, work into the grain, let it absorb for 20 minutes, buff off the excess. One tin covers a pair of boots three to four times. Standard maintenance alongside Fiebing’s saddle soap for cleaning — clean first, condition after. Full routine in the leather care guide.
